The legendary city sought for centuries has finally been found under the volcanic caldera of Santorini. A blessing and a curse, for while the city has been preserved magnificently, the new excavation must be very delicate, else a quake may be triggered and the city lost forever. This is why, although the discovery was made fifteen years ago, it still continues today, as tunnels and buildings are fortified to protect against earthquake damage. Progress is slow, but steady. The area is under high security, and due to easier gains pirates tend to stay away from the place.
Atlantis is not open to visitors, although some islands do cruises which allow a distance-view of the site. It's not all that pretty to look at, and there are much better things to see in the vicinity. Whilst it seems a great opportunity, Atlantis is mostly a disappointment. It will be many years yet before the excavation will be complete, and it remains to be seen whether the Greek government will allow it to become publicly accessible.
