Ingapirca is an amazing place. Under the Ecuador Relic Institute, it has been completely rebuilt and a small populace reside there, living just as their ancestors did many centuries ago. They are not shy to allow the odd tourist to come and take a look, which is rare enough in itself as the place requires a three-day horseback ride to reach from the nearest city, Quito. That, and the fact that Quito's tourism has suffered a lot thanks to the loss of air travel. Still, it has held out well to compete with the Peruvians, who have the immensely popular Machu Picchu. Ingapirca, however, is an utterly unique experience.
Although troublesome to get to, a stop in Quito and a horse-ride to Ingapirca is definitely worth it, should the opportunity arise. With some of the most beautiful mountain views to admire along the way, such a trip brings together the rush of city like, the quiet mountains and the incredible awe of seeing an ancient Incan city brought to life.
